The Old Porter County Home
Once regarded as one of Porter County's most haunted locations, this site served as a home for the insane, an asylum, and a poor farm since the late 1800s. It was closed in the 1980s and housed the county’s poor, infirm, and mentally ill individuals. The mentally challenged were kept in poorly lit basements with dirt floors behind wooden doors equipped with food tray slots. Many would find ways to escape, wandering down Route 2, only to be retrieved by local law enforcement and returned to their dungeon-like quarters. A forgotten cemetery and a chicken coop remain on the grounds, but the spirits still linger, as we'll reveal on this tour!
